Club History

When the Club was first established the members consisted mainly of the higher echelons of the Civil Service, namely the British. “Outsiders” such as Planters and Managers were admitted, sparingly.

In 1985, the name of the club was changed from Johore Civil Service Club to Johor Cultural & Sports Club, to reflect the cross-section of members from all walks of life. The acronym “JCSC” was retained, to ‘open membership’ to the private sector, and thus saw the beginning of further and better facilities and activities, ranging from sports, cricket, hockey, tennis, billiards, snooker, darts, rugby, etc., to social, welfare and entertainment. JCSC has, over the years, held “court” to many district, inter-state, national and international tournaments on the surrounding grounds, and host to various charitable organizations, worthy causes, both local and overseas, ‘health talks’, “voter registration”, etc.

JCSC has also hosted various games such as ‘Annual Inter-Club’ with other District Clubs of Johore, such as Tanjong Club, Muar, Batu Pahat Club, RJCC in Johore Bahru, Cricket Club of Singapore and Singapore Recreation Club.

With this, the Club has attracted both State and National Luminaries, over a period of time. Some of the notables are, Y.A.M Tunku Abdul Rahman Ibni Almarhum Tunku Temenggong Ahmad, YBhg. Dato Abdullah Bin Mohammed, YAB. Tun Dr.Awang Hassan, YBhg.Tan Sri Taib Andak. YBhg. Dato’ Dr.E.C. Pink, YBhg. Dato’ Abdul Rahman Bin Jaafar, YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Syed Othman Bin Ali, YBhg. Datuk Hj. Ibrahim Bin Abdul Majid, YBhg. YBhg. Datuk Yasin Bin Datuk Hj. Abd.Rahman, Yang Amat Arif Tan Sri Haidar Bin Mohd Nor, Yang Arif Justice Dato’ L.C Vohrah, Yang Arif Justice Dato’ Hj.Abu Mansor Ali, Yang Arif Justice Dato’ James Foong Cheng Yuen, YBhg. ,Dato’ Chua Jui Leng, YBhg. YBhg. Dato’ Jimmy Low Boon Hong, YBhg. Dato’ Chin Hon Ngian, Professor G.S. Nijar, to name a few! JCSC, with her facilities, has the benefit of having numerous Affiliated Clubs, outstation, Singapore and International.

Three (3) years ago, we were favored, through the good graces and office of YAB Menteri Besar Dato’ Abdul Ghani Bin Othman DK, and State Government officials, with a 2.0 acre land within proximity of the Royal Johor Country Club (RJCC).

Various projects have been introduced, others, in the “pipeline”! Membership is now open for enrolment.

Given the facilities of a new Club ( in about 2 ½ years from now), which include, Swimming Pool, Food and Beverage outlets, more than one (1) , Conference Room with facilities, Tennis Courts, Billiards and Darts Room, Office, and maybe, with additional funds available, accommodation, a grand project indeed, but why not, for the oldest, established Club in Johore. We have every reason to make this work, and be proud of!

• JCSC has been acknowledged as the birth-place of the world’s first Hash Chapter, in 1932. LT.COL.’HORSE’ THOMSON has been credited for this great and auspicious moment in time!!

There is no doubt that JCSC with its rich history and Affiliations is ideally suited for this. It’s a place for all and not merely the wealthy.

We have much work in store for our Club/Members.
